Musical Director

Neil Metcalfe

Neil read music at Edinburgh University before taking-up a scholarship in the Opera School of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he trained as a Répétiteur, Vocal Coach, Pianist and Conductor. He worked for a number of years on the Music Staff of Scottish Opera, in opera houses in Sydney, Dortmund, Pittsburgh, and Belfast, and also with many touring companies including Bolshoi Opera and Deutsche Oper am Rhein. As a performer, he has recorded for BBC Radio and on the Linn Records label and enjoys a busy career as a solo artist, accompanist, musical director and conductor.

Neil is a keen supporter of young people in music; he is Chairman of the Scottish Schools Orchestra and has run Music Departments at Loretto, Rannoch and Strathallan schools. He is currently the Concerts Director of Scotland’s award-winning baroque ensemble The Dunedin Consort and Players and holds the post of Musical Director of Edinburgh Music Theatre Company, Balerno Theatre Company and Edinburgh University Chorus.

Neil's work with Edinburgh Grand Opera includes concert performances of Die Fledermaus at The Canongate Kirk and St Andrew's & St George's Church at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Macbeth  at The Royal Lyceum Theatre and preparation for fundraising concerts with Raymond Gubbay The Mikado in The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and The Usher Hall, Edinburgh.   Neil worked with us too on our UK Premiere and Edinburgh Festival Fringe Concerts of La Prigione di Edimburgo.

We look forward to continued collaboration with Neil for our next fundraising concerts for Raymond Gubbay in December in Glasgow and Edinburgh as before, Pirates of Penzance, and our next fully staged performance, Carmen, in May 2012 at the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh.
